The visual system is the part of the central nervous system which enables organisms to see. It interprets the information from visible light to build a representation of the world surrounding the body. The visual system accomplishes a number of complex tasks, including the reception of light, and the formation of monocular representations; the construction of a binocular perception from a pair of two dimensional projections; the identification and categorization of visual objects; assessing distances to and between objects; and guiding body movements to visual objects. I think what you are referring to is the way the visual system interprets images. The brain takes the images that we obtain through our eyes and has to interpret them into a working image. Because of this much of what we see is actually our brain's interpretation of the world around us. According to theory, the brain is unable to constantly and instantly interpret these images so much of what we see is our brain trying to predict what the images are. Because our brains interpret the images and predict(or fill in visual holes) there are mistakes made by our brains that can return false images. These are usually subtle and unnoticeable as the brain will correct the mistake rapidly. An example of this could be an optical illusion.
