The term graphic design can refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines which focus on visual communication and presentation. Various methods are used to create and combine symbols, images and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce the final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated. Common uses of graphic design include magazines, advertisements and product packaging. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as shapes and color which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Graphic design" What goes in to a Graphic Design portfolio for college? Q. I'm applying to art schools and I've done some stuff with graphic design and I have no idea what to put in my portfolio. I've done things on illustrator, foundation drawings done from observation & still-life, things I did last year in my AP art class, black and white ink drawings done for "basic graphic design" class. I have no idea what to use. Anyone that's applied as a Graphic Design major before know what they used in their portfolio? I'm thinking about RISD, Pratt, and Syracuse if that has any relevance. They are all very different areas of design - 1) Product Design - the design of items we use everyday, it's very vast really - designing furniture, appliances, phones, cars, could be anything even designing something like a cigarette lighter. 2) Interior Design - deals with the look of spaces inside a building/house: designing a wall that divides a big room, creating special lighting effects. 3) Graphic Design - designing images like posters, advertisments, websites.. maybe I should just say the word 'Photoshop' =) To answer the rest of your question, Hotel Management has liitle to do with either 3 professions - that focuses more on tourism and taking care of a hotel - getting a hotel up & running, fixing up rooms for guests,… [cont.] Answered by Shellz - Sun Oct 4 13:26:45 2009 How to pursue graphic design and writing?
Q. I want to pursue and career in graphic design and/or writing. Currently I go to an online high school in the the 10th grade. I can choose my own electives. I want to know what is the best way to prepare myself to enter these field. Any good advice is truly appreciated. Asked by Miko - Sat Oct 24 14:49:52 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I am not sure on how to get more chances to get into college, except general better grades. But for graphic design you should study the work of people you like. Exposure to other people's work should trigger your creativity, and allow you to explore bolder ideas. Do not forget improving your technique(s), to widen your graphic vocabulary. Similarly for writing, you should read and read, and then write and write, and then read and write. Perhaps joining a writing club and an arts class might help you to get and provide feedback to others. Two quotes from Borges 1) Reading is an activity subsequent to writing: more resigned, more civil, more intellectual. 2) I take more pride on the pages I have read, than from the ones I have written.
