3D computer graphics (in contrast to 2D computer graphics) are graphics that use a three-dimensional representation of geometric data (often Cartesian) that is stored in the computer for the purposes of performing calculations and rendering 2D images. Such images may be stored for viewing later or displayed in real-time.

Despite these differences, 3D computer graphics rely on many of the same algorithms as 2D computer vector graphics in the wire-frame model and 2D computer raster graphics in the final rendered display. In computer graphics software, the distinction between 2D and 3D is occasionally blurred; 2D applications may use 3D techniques to achieve effects such as lighting, and 3D may use 2D rendering techniques.

3D computer graphics are often referred to as 3D models. Apart from the rendered graphic, the model is contained within the graphical data file. However, there are differences. A 3D model is the mathematical representation of any three-dimensional object. A model is not technically a graphic until it is displayed. Due to 3D printing, 3D models are not confined to virtual space. A model can be displayed visually as a two-dimensional image through a process called 3D rendering, or used in non-graphical computer simulations and calculations.

What specs are recommended to do 3D graphics professionally?
Q. Specifically: For videogames, animations and 3D rendering. What would you recommend? Mac or PC? What hardware: multicore or high clockspeed singlecore? RAM? Graphics card maker: Nvidia or ATI? 32bit vs 64bit? XP vs Vista? 3DSMAX or Maya or other?

A. If you are wanting to just make models, then I would say some 3D modeling courses, maquette making, and illustration courses are an order. If you want to go more the animation route, then you will probably need to take some animation courses obviously, film classes, modeling, and digital production. A rule of thumb I hear is to stick with Maya for animation and 3DS Max for modeling. But word also is that Maya may totally swallow Max, so who knows.

A. In the old days computer graphics could only be drawn with lines. The computers were made to be able to control the magnets in a cathode ray tube and to be able to turn the beam on and off. In this way they were able to draw what's called "vector graphics", i.e. text and images that were composed of line segments. If you tried to draw too many lines then it took a long time to render each frame and the image would start to flicker. Eventually computers switched over to rasterized graphics. This was closer to how television works...an entire screen would be rendered one line at a time and an internal buffer stored the color for each screen location. With this new system, lines were still faster to draw lines than triangles (which is what… [cont.]

How can you find out if your graphics card is a 3d graphics card?
Q. I'm looking to buy a game that requires a 3d video card and I don't know how to check to see if my card is capable.

A. You should be able to access the card properties through control panel. There you should be given a choice of acceleration methods. If this does not have hardware acceleration listed as an option, it is probably either a low end 3d or 2d card. Most 3d cards have an embedded heat sink that you can see when you look at it. For ease of explaining, please visit my site below, and go to the computer talk section where you can see what a typical 3d card looks like. If this is an older card, your game probably won't play right anyway. Most games now require anywhere from 16-64 megabyte video, and a few newer ones as much as 128 megabyte. For the best prices should you decide to replace the card please visit and Both are good sources. … [cont.]
